THE LEGEND OF FLAME

from/$27 per person

The origins of the land of fire

Description

Azerbaijan’s nickname, ‘Land of Fire’ is far more than a marketing slogan as you’ll see at these two fascinating sites. Azerbaijan was one of the original homelands of the ancient religion of Zoroastrianism in which flames were seen as a symbol of the divine. And, as though heaven sent, it was a country where fires leapt spontaneously from the ground. And they still do as you’ll see at Yanar Dag (‘Burning Mountain’). While hardly a ‘mountain’, this windswept hillside 25 kilometres northeast of Baku has been burning for as long as anyone can remember, and the fire isn’t showing signs of going out any time soon. It’s an unusual curiosity, but by no means the only fire phenomenon in Azerbaijan.

A relatively short drive to the south of here in the town of Surakhany, Ateshgah is a rare example of a well-preserved fire temple. Restored in the 17th and 18th centuries by Indian merchants its central fire-hearth sits above a natural gas vent and glows with ever –burning flames. Surrounding hermit cells now form a museum and the whole structure is set behind a grand fortress-style gateway.

Mugam is a genre of national music embracing the age-old traditions of the Azerbaijani people. Then you should visit the Old City “Icheri Sheher”. “Icheri Sheher” in translation means the inner city. Internal it became known after the oil boom
mid-XIX century, when the city ceased to fit in the fortress walls and went beyond it. In the territory of “Icheri Sheher”, the area of which is 22 hectares, several dozens of historical and architectural monuments are concentrated, including the Palace of Shirvanshahs, the symbol of the city of Baku – the Maiden Tower, the place of recreation of merchants – Karavansaray. “Icheri Sheher” is a living organism with its own infrastructure and residential areas, where 1,300 families live. Day 3
Breakfast in the hotel.
10:00 Departure for the excursion.
Visiting the temple “Ateshgah” and the reserve “Gala” Visiting the temple of fire worshipers “Ateshgyah”. In translation, ateshgyah means “house of fire” or “place of fire”. The territory of the temple is known for such a unique natural phenomenon, as burning outlets of natural gas. In ancient times, the temple of fire was one of the main places of worship among the Zoroastrians. In the museum complex “Ateshgyah” you will be told about the way of life of the followers of the prophet Zarathustra, as well as about their traditions and customs.

Then you should visit the Baku State Historical and Ethnographic Reserve in the village of Gala. This name, which means “fortress”, came from the citadel that was here. Gala is not only a historical settlement, but also an invaluable and architectural heritage, which is a vivid example of the original national architecture of Absheron. In this regard, in 1988 the territory of the village was declared a state historical and ethnographic reserve. In the nature reserve,

the area of which is more than 200 hectares, there are 243 historical and architectural monuments (mosques, baths, suites, dwelling and utility rooms, etc.). The historical center of the village is the 14th century citadel, located on a hill. The tower of the citadel was destroyed in the Soviet era, only the remains of the fortress walls and the medieval Juma mosque were preserved

13: 00 Lunch. Main dish: Buglama
Excursion to “Yanar Dag“. Here you can see such a natural phenomenon as the constantly burning output of natural gas directly on the rock. This phenomenon also gave the reserve the name “Yanar Dag” (Burning Mountain). Historians believe that, perhaps, Azerbaijan got its name – the country of lights – just because of this place.
19: 00 Dinner. Main course: Jorat kutaby with greens and meat.

Day 4.
09:00 Departure for breakfast “in Baku”.
Then you will have an excursion to the Gobustan reserve. The reserve is widely known for its excellently preserved rock paintings – petroglyphs, a kind of artistic “archive” of human evolution on the planet Earth.

The documents of such archives are the first translation of the human “I” to the surrounding world. The rocks of Gobustan are not only the brightest witnesses of the prehistoric period of human existence. They have reflected the history of this region for almost 15 thousand years – from the end of the Upper Paleolithic era to the Middle Ages. To date, Azerbaijani scientists have identified, described and studied more than 4,000 petroglyphs (rock carvings in the stone carving technique), and this important work continues. Before the start of the tour of Gobustan, guests will visit the eponymous interactive museum, where they will be able to get information about the flora and fauna of Gobustan with the help of special multimedia programs and touch screens.
Few people know that Azerbaijan ranks first in the world in terms of the number of active mud volcanoes.
Traces of their activity can also be found in Gobustan. These volcanoes are formations in the form of a cone-shaped hill with a crater in the soil.
And of course, that tourists will also have the opportunity to inspect them during this excursion.

13:30 Lunch in the fish restaurant.
Main course: Liavagi from fish.

19:00 Departure for farewell dinner in the restaurant.
Main Course: Lamb Sage
Return to the hotel.

Ateshgah & Yanardagh. Absheron tour

from 150 AZN / person

The program of the “Ateshgah & Yanardagh. Absheron tour” includes: Excursion to the Temple of Fire Worshippers – “Ateshgah” and the fiery mountain “Yanardagh” in the village Mehemmedli (duration 3.5 hours)

.

Ateshgah & Yanardagh. Absheron tour

All who have been at Baku, and almost all who have heard of Baku, know of the Temple of Eternal Fire Ateshgah (Atashgah), located 20 kilometers east of the town center. The territory is known thanks to such a unique nature phenomenon as ever burning outburst of natural gas (bursting out gas contacts wit oxygen and catches fire). The Temple, as it looks today, was built in the 17th – 18thcenturies.

Ateshgah is an Indian temple of fire worshipers in Azerbaijan, on the Apsheron Peninsula, on the outskirts of the village of Surakhany in Surakhani district, at various times revered by Zoroastrians, Hindus and Sikhs. Originated in the XVII – XVIII centuries. in the place of “eternal” unquenchable lights – burning outlets of natural gas [1], due to which the temple is called “Ateshgyah”, which means “House of Fire”, “Place of Fire”.

In the early 19th century the Temple acquired its present-day appearance. Ateshgah is a pentagonal structure with a castellation and entrance portal. In the center of a yard the altar-sanctuary executed in the form of a stone bower on which angles some more centers are located towers. In the center of an altar – a well from which beat “eternally” burning gas.

Ateshgah & Yanardagh. Absheron tour

Azerbaijan has been historically known as the Land of Fire because of its rich oil and gas resources. The natural fire that have been blazing in various parts of the country for millennia have greatly influenced the beliefs and traditions of the local people and has been celebrated in works of literature and art. An example of this natural phenomenon is found 25 kilometres from Baku, in a place known as Yanardagh located in the village of Mahammadli. The natural gas that seeps onto the surface gives this mountain (whose name  translates as ‘burning mountain’) its famous ‘burning’ look. In order to protect  Yanardagh and attract tourists here, this area was declared a historical, cultural and natural reserve in 2007. Today  Yanardagh reserve is a favourite destination for tourists visiting the country. The mountain appears to be covered in tongues of flame from its foot to its peak, resembling red tulips. At first, such an unusual sight may give a strange impression, but this feeling turns into fascination upon watching the fi re majestically seep out of the mountain core. 25 km from Baku
